Topic: Classic AAA games you would like to see fully remastered

There's certainly no shortage of classics getting work done on them (with varying success) but which titles would potentially excite you most?

For me personally it would be the original Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005). That stylized presentation, working your way up that blacklist and the campy cutscenes really gave it character. I remember reading somewhere that the game is sadly in some kind of licensing limbo making a remaster unlikely.

Another no brainer for me is AC Unity. In my opinion even just some updated character models, texture work and a solid lighting model would easily put this up there with current gen titles.

So what are your picks?

For me is is mostly PS1 era stuff, MGS 1 and 2 would be amazing, FF IX, SW:KotoR 1 and 2. I would also love to see Rogue Squadron games and Star Fox Adventures remastered and released on Switch 2.

@MattUK Good call, I wouldn't be mad at a quality KotoR remaster.

Haze, a full remake

Haze is one of those games that time forgot. It's funny because I remember the charm it it had but can't really recall any standout moments in the game. I'll have to go to Youtube to jog my memory.
I'd also like to add the PS1 game "Driver". I'll take a remaster, but a full remake would likely be the better option there.

Metal Gear Solid has to be a contender as one of the best games ever made, or the two MSX2 games. I'd also like Dino Crisis in the same style as the Resident Evil 2 remake.

The original Assassin's Creed had flashes of greatness that could probably now be realised.

I'd love to see Starbreeze / MachineGames' "The Darkness" come to current gen consoles.

Honourable mention, and it doesn't even need to be a remaster, is Treasure's "Gradius 5". Game is awesome and it's a tragedy it's stuck on PS2.

@KenMasters The Darkness is so badly needed. I'll even just take a quick resolution and frame rate increase labelled 'remastered' just to experience that game again.

I often wonder whether it would hold up as well as it does in my head, since I remember absolutely loving it when it released, but I have just flat out refused to go back and play it in 30fps to find out.

I've definitely got some in mind:
Splatterhouse (2010): I honestly absolutely loved this reboot, despite it's shortcomings & infamous development history. Splatterhouse was one of the IPs that got the "Encore" trademark registered long ago (a la Mr. Driller & Katamari Damacy), but it sadly never became an actual product, which is a shame as I would have love to see a remaster of this game with the technical kinks ironed out.

Ninja Blade: The Xbox 360 (& Games for Windows PC port) game by FromSoftware that, in an alternate universe, could have been the direction FromSoft went in over Demon's Souls. I played this a few years ago for the first time & had a really fun time, though the frame rate could be hit pretty hard at times. This was from some of the same staff that had made Otogi & Metal Wolf Chaos, so it's a shame that this hasn't been given a second chance.

Headhunter: The European-exclusive Dreamcast game (& later ported to PS2 for North American release) that some tried hyping up as a "Metal Gear Solid killer", but having replayed it a few years ago I felt that it held it extremely well on its own. Give this a nice remaster, maybe with a controllable camera (though I feel that might mess with how the game is designed, to some extent), & give new players a chance to re-evaluate it. Some of the staff behind this game went on to work on the Just Cause series, namely 2 & 3.

If we're talking full remakes with brand new engines, graphics, modernized controls, etc etc (I'm not usually that interested in games that are just sharpened up a bit, etc), then I'd love (In no particular order)

-Splinter Cell
-Deus Ex
-Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay
-Thief 1/2
-Beyond Good and Evil

Edit: I'm quite excited for the apparent new version of Black Flag that's coming. Though the game still looks quite decent, so I'm really hoping it's noticeably nicer, as I've been delaying my replaying of it.

There are a few AA games I wouldn't mind to see remastered or even just ports. Anyone remember The Saboteur on PS3? Really good game but ran like your typical PS3 game at the time. Sleeping Dogs would be another one; might even promote a sequel.

@Holmes108 Good news, Splinter Cell is in development, though we haven't heard anything for a while. I hope they keep the recorded dialog though.

I do, but do YOU remember Velvet Assassin?. 😉

Being biased I'd want a full remake of Shenmue 1 and 2. I know there was the leaked video DF showed in 2018 but a full, ground up remake would be awesome.

Sleeping Dogs would be cool. Deus Ex too. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 done together as well!

@NetshadeX Yea, although I never played it. That gen covered the time in my life where I was on active duty and then grad school so I probably missed 9 out of every 10 game worth playing unfortunately.

Oh, you're right, I DID hear something about that. Totally forgot. And yes, Michael Ironside FTW.

FINAL FANTASY XIII. With the following improvements:
1. Complete graphical overall but within the original engine (i.e..,Crystal Tools) or at least a competent engine (NOT Unreal Engine).

What I do want from the graphical overall:

  • Respect the original artstyle / aesthetic
  • Updated models, textures, lighting, materials, shaders, etc.
  • Modern hair simulation system
  • Better DOF effect (I'm all for DOF in games but the one implemented in FFXIII is TERRIBLE)
  • Tasteful use of normal maps, parallax occlusion mapping, ambient occlusion, etc.
  • Redrawn UI (exact same style/aesthetic, just higher resolution)
  • Make the actual in-engine visuals better match the pre-rendered cinematics

What I do NOT want from the graphical overhaul:

  • TAA, DLSS, or other blurry smeary modern forms of AA/upscaling
  • Weird plasticky lighting and materials that make the game look more "modern" but also strip it of it's original atmosphere and charm
  • Modern UI redesign (i.e., flat design)
  • Artistic changes which do not respect the og artstyle / aesthetic

2. Pre-rendered cutscenes all re-rendered at higher resolution with less compression and with material and shader updates to bring them up to current standards for pre-rendered graphics

3. QOL improvements (e.g., 2/4/6/8/10x battle speed, ability to save anywhere not just at checkpoints/terminals, etc.)

4. Bring over some of the updated mechanics from XIII-2 (e.g., striking an enemy before battle, switch characters during battle, etc.)

5. Add new content (e.g., Lighting's house, Hope's school, etc.)

6. Make Cocoon overworld interconnect like Pulse + add ability to revisit previously visited areas again like Pulse

7. Complete overhaul of combat animations - make it look like the 2006 trailer!!!

I'm adding the F.E.A.R. games to the mix, especially the original. Those slo-mo shotgun moments haven't been beat yet.

The Darkness is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of games from the PS3 era.

I have pulled out the PS3 and played through the whole game at least 3 times during the last 5 years or so, and I have to say it holds up - technical limitations aside.

I'm sure it's partly nostalgia fueled but the story is so well-acted and compelling and the combat visceral and grounded. The controls are a bit awkward, especially in combination with the bad performance, but I believe a PC port would take care of both of those issues. Also, imagine a fully path-traced version of this game.

To make my own contribution I'd love to see a remake of the first Prototype game.

Honestly, for most of my favorite old games, I'd like them as I remember them, so I'd be glad if they just get them working on modern devices. I particularly miss the old racing games with unique tracks as it's all about the same open-world one-biome formula now. Games like the entire Ridge Racer series, the older Need for Speeds (before the tuner trash — sorry, I hate the Fast n Furious-inspired devolution of racing in pop culture), and the Screamer series. The upcoming Screamer game has about as much in common with the original Screamer games as the recent Marathon game did with the original.
