Spider-Man 2 developers Insomniac Games has announced a new update for the game, adding two new costume options, power saver mode and enhanced PSSR upscaling on PS5 Pro.
The new costumes reflect two recent Spider-Man appearances - in the Brand New Day movie and the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls game - and are free to equip in the game once the 1.005.000 update is installed.
The technical changes are a little more interesting for Digital Foundry readers, as the power saver mode is thought to be laying the groundwork for the rumoured upcoming PlayStation 6 handheld. Spider-Man 2 ranks as one of the tentpole games for the system, so ensuring it runs properly at lower power levels makes a lot of sense. For most people, this isn't something worth trying on a PS5 or PS5 Pro console, but the update could potentially be useful for anyone that is playing PS5 with one eye on the electricity metre or in extremely hot ambient temperatures. Every little helps, I suppose.
Likewise, official PSSR 2.0 support means that it's not necessary to force enhanced PSSR using the OS-level controls on PS5 Pro. We don't normally see a huge difference in actual performance or fidelity terms through official implementation, but it is possible for developers to fix bugs, tune texture mipmap bias settings or adjust internal resolutions with PSSR 2.0's better results in mind.
Regardless of the implementation changes, the change should at least ensure that less technically-minded users are getting the best-looking version of PSSR when booting up the game. Given that PS5 Pro already offers substantial advantages over PS5 in this game, any further improvements are just icing on the cake.
