Metro Redux, the two-part remaster of Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, is getting a free graphics overhaul for current-gen consoles and PC as the series passes the 50 million lifetime sales milestone.
That means native versions of the game for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, plus a sizeable update to the PC release. However, this is not a remaster or remake, with the developers saying that "the original Metro Redux experience and aesthetic has been preserved".
The headline addition here is that owners of Metro Redux on PS5 Pro can play the game with PSSR support, while Xbox Series X owners get TSR upscaling - both of which should improve image quality substantially. Xbox Series consoles in general also receive spatial audio support, which was previously lacking.
PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X look likely to offer two modes: A native 3840x2160 (4K) output at 60fps and an upscaled 4K at 120fps. (It's not clear what Xbox Series S will offer; I'd suggest a sub-4K 120fps output is more likely.) Graphics settings have also been bumped, with higher-quality lighting, shadows and particles. Current-gen first-party controllers are also better handled post-update with adaptive trigger and impulse trigger support on relevant platforms.
Over on PC, DLSS upscaling has been added alongside spatial audio support. The update also includes "increased quality of life community bugfixes and frequently asked for improvements."
Full patch notes are set to be confirmed at launch, and it'll be fascinating to see exactly how each platform compares in terms of features and improvements. For example, Sony's recently-revealed QSSR for base PS5 seems a good shout?
The update will be released on October 22nd for PC and a week later, October 29th for console players. It's free for all owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux across the Steam, Epic, Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series stores. The Metro Redux bundle itself is available online for under £5 (or free in the Extra and Premium tiers of PS+), so I'd recommend checking them out if you've not played these seminal games.
Deep Silver's next game, Metro 2039, is scheduled to release on 4th February 2027. We've already gone hands-on with the PC version of the game - which is shaping up brilliantly.
