Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has faced some controversy over its visuals from fans and DF writers alike, with its large scope and dated Unreal Engine 4 technology producing obvious flaws in indirect lighting, diffuse lighting and direct shadowing. Community developer David Matos has introduced a new "Shader Injector" mod that aims to overhaul these elements to meet modern visual standards. And unlike conventional post-processing mods, this tool reaches directly into the rendering pipeline to replace key lighting shaders, giving it some unique capabilities.

The mod primarily addresses the characteristic "glowiness" caused by specular light leaks throughout the game. According to the mod developer, Square Enix erred with key reflection implementation details, relying too heavily on a limited number of cubemap captures. Matos made tweaks that allowed the baked GI data to more effectively augment the cubemap data, giving objects a more realistic approximation of specular response.

Screen-space reflections (SSR) have also been extensively refined. Square Enix's original implementation lacked proper glossy-reflection support and had minimal coverage, leading to odd visual results. Matos has tweaked the SSR to cover surfaces more broadly and disperse correctly on rough materials. In areas like the Gold Saucer theme park, this transformation creates a much stronger correspondence between scenes and their reflections. It's not a perfect solution, but it does fall in line with many modern big-budget titles - at least amongst games that don't use RT reflections.

In Matos' view, Square Enix also erred in relying too heavily on cubemaps in calculating the game's diffuse indirect lighting, so he elected to rely on the game's more reliable probe GI lighting instead. The mod has options to supplement this technique with ground truth visibility bitmask ambient occlusion (GT-VBAO) and screen-space global illumination (SSGI), which improve high-frequency diffuse indirect lighting over the original game's relatively light screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO). Both carry a performance penalty, but the visual improvement is likely worth it for those with mid-range or high-end systems.

Beyond indirect lighting, the mod tackles the game's "floaty" appearance caused by low-resolution, blurry shadow maps and the lack of shadow-casting foliage. Matos re-implemented screen-space contact shadows, a feature common in Unreal Engine 4 but seemingly stripped from the game. These shadows add fine detail to objects that aren't drawn into the game's shadow maps, like grasses and small protrusions on buildings.

The mod also breathes new life into water rendering, adjusting surface normals to produce fine cross-directional ripples layered over larger geometric waves. Caustics have been added via a runtime noise pattern, alongside a stochastic depth blur that scales with distance to convey depth effectively. Additionally, a new shader technique softens the waterline, allowing it to fade naturally against sloped terrain rather than presenting the hard-edged, geometric intersections seen previously.

In terms of performance, the mod offers different configurations to suit varying hardware. A scene that runs at ~115fps at 4K max settings on an RTX 5090 with the game running stock drops to around 110fps with the mod turned on with its performance preset. Dialling in maximum quality, which enables SSGI and auto-exposure, drops to around 80fps. Shader compilation sutter can be an issue when booting up the mod for the first time, but any hitches faded in the first minute of play on a Core i7 13700K system. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Taken as a whole, the FF7 Rebirth Shader Injector is a convincing visual upgrade that trades minor, familiar artefacts for a more consistently correct look. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the improvements to lighting and shadowing represent a genuine accomplishment that fixes many of the original critiques Oliver had with the game's lighting. Looking ahead, Matos plans to add AO filtering and resolution scaling, while fixing extant issues with HDR and keeping the door open to applying this framework to future titles via open-source licensing and community involvement. If FF7 Revelation ships with similar lighting to Rebirth in 2027, there may be room for a similar mod for that game too.
