Nowadays most major forums have their own image uploader, likely since (sensibly-sized) pictures don't significantly consume bandwidth (i.e. trivial monetary cost). Can be controlled by the staff by setting a maximum allowed resolution and file size.
There isn't any reliable third-party host anymore — Imgur now removes some images** and I remember seeing reports already a decade ago of them banning domains to prevent forum users from embedding images. All other hosts likely have worse retention, don't support hotlinking and/or may be discontinued at any time.
If the DF users must rely on third-party services, I presume that a third of the current pics on the forum are gone by the end of 2026. Also the images may be replaced with ads, like Imageshack has acted***.
@a-follower thanks for the suggestion — I'll certainly raise it with the management team and we'll decide if we want to move forward.
This isn't a technical issue, we could of course allow uploads. However, there are risks attached, both from a security perspective and a legal perspective (copyright, illegal, CSAM, etc). We would need to use a third-party service to screen any images, and that would come at a cost.
