When Alex Battaglia first reviewed Monster Hunter Wilds on PC in "Monster Hunter Wilds PC - Profound Perf Problems Must Be Addressed," he rightly called out the game's poor performance and noted that there wasn't a way to put together a proper optimized settings guide given the state it was in. Since then, Digital Foundry has released two follow-up videos covering the improvements from Title Update 4 and the HD texture pack.
Since those videos, Wilds has added new graphics and CPU settings aimed at helping lower-end PCs, though it's not entirely clear how much of a performance impact the new CPU settings actually have.
With the Switch 2 version on the horizon, I think this would be a great time for a proper optimized settings video, one that goes through each setting and its performance cost. It would also make for a great point of comparison once the Switch 2 version launches. It would also be good to see performance outside the starting area, as zones like the Scarlet Forest and Oilwell Basin can hammer performance even more than the Windward Plains.
On top of that, there's a weird bug (if you can even call it that) that nobody seems to discuss online: the AI upscaler mode (DLSS/FSR quality, balanced, performance, etc.) appears to affect foliage render distance. DLAA/AMD Native AA shows the most foliage, while Ultra Performance shows noticeably less. I've tested this on two different systems: my old rig (5900X, 32GB DDR4, RTX 3070 Ti) and my current one (9800X3D, 32GB DDR5, RX 9070 XT), and the behavior was consistent on both. This is extremely noticeable if you go out to the starting area (Windward Plains) during "Daytime" in the "Plenty" season and look out on the field right where you jump down from the rock bridge. This behavior hasn't changed since launch to my knowledge.
Thank you for everything you guys do and thank you for having a platform for suggestions!
