Minecraft developer Mojang has announced that the game is finally getting an official Switch 2 release on October 27th. The game will feature the "Vibrant Visuals" graphics update announced last year, which adds more modern lighting techniques, volumetric fog and improved reflections to the characteristically blocky game.
The game also will support a refreshed version of the "Super Mario Mash-Up pack", which is exclusive to Nintendo consoles and offers Mario-themed skins, music and indeed an entire area with Peach's castle to explore.
A price for the game hasn't yet been announced, but owners of the original Switch release will be able to access the Switch 2 upgrade more cheaply - either via a straight discount or through a Minecraft sub. Microsoft says that it will announce more details about the "digital upgrade path" as the release date approaches.
It'll be fascinating to see how the game runs on Switch 2 in its dedicated version. The Switch release famously ran at 720p at launch, then was upgraded to 1080p some time later. A 4K 60fps rendition in docked play would make sense, and targeting 1080p for the handheld mode - ideally with high frame-rate support - would be a great achievement too.
