Sony Patents "Generation Super Sampling" - Next-Gen Frame Generation with Controller Inputs, Perfect for PS6? 1

Sony is surely hard at work on its next-generation games console, and one of its key features may have been leaked via a new US patent filed just a few days ago. As spotted by IGN, patent US20250209568A1 is entitled "Generation Super Sampling" and details a method of frame generation that optionally includes player inputs into its prediction model, thereby providing more accurate generated frames and limiting frame-to-frame latency.

Thus far, PSSR only includes a super sampling element, but AMD, Intel and Nvidia have all produced frame generation techniques that work in a similar fashion - taking two frames and interpolating (at least) one generated frame between them. The upshot is that visual smoothness improves considerably, at the expense of some extra processing time and an extra frame's worth of latency.

These techniques normally rely on motion vectors to improve their predictions - eg tracking how an object moves across the screen - but none of them also take player inputs into account, giving Sony's patented technique a potential advantage. The same patent also mentions multi-frame generation, stating that the system could "be trained to predict any number of images before or after the input image."

Would you use frame generation on PS6?

Sony system architect Mark Cerny has already confirmed that frame generation is coming to PlayStation hardware some time after 2026, so the news here isn't unexpected, even if the specifics of the implementation are more exciting than expected.

The usual provisos apply of course - Sony has not announced the PS6, not all patents end up being used, plans change and so on. In fact, Cerny himself told us that Sony files "many patents during the course of business, not all of which relate to released systems or future products."

Regardless, this method of frame generation seems like a logical direction of travel and could feasibly be implemented on the PlayStation 6, given that AMD's RDNA architecture has supported AI acceleration since RDNA 3 in 2022 and was beefed up significantly with RDNA 4 in 2025. If PS6 uses RDNA 5 as rumoured, then even better results should be possible.

Do you think we'll see frame generation become a core part of Sony's feature set for the PlayStation 6? Will Sony go with PlayStation Generation Super Sampling (PGSS) as its name, or something better? Let me know in the comments below.
