The number of ported, decompiled and recompiled games has shot up exponentially over the past month, with retro titles escaping long-standing platform restrictions to turn up on PCs, phones and consoles alike. The confluence of AI tools and the success of vibe coding projects is quickly approaching a critical mass, and platform holders are going to have to either start locking down their games or embrace the new open vibe-coded spirit of the times.
It looks like Xbox is heading down the latter path, as CEO Asha Sharma today announced that the company was forming a special Xbox Labs group to study the phenomenon and contribute to porting efforts - just a week after declaring that Project Helix would consist of an open "family of devices", all of which are likely targets for AI-coded game ports.
It's a fascinating announcement for many reasons, given that Xbox has a business need to preserve the platform exclusivity of their back catalogue - even if they've taken steps to make older games available on modern PCs. This group is going to be formed of "a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists", says Sharma, who will "build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating."

Sharma goes on to say that "while it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators... These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models."
Given that Microsoft's console business is in a firm third place behind rivals Sony and Nintendo, it's perhaps not too surprising that Xbox is a little more willing to tear up the established norms and try to put their weight behind a movement that could destabilise the industry. Still, Sharma does say that Xbox's priorities aren't changing, and that this Labs team will be able to explore the new technology "without abandoning the work already underway."
