Re: Nvidia's new DLSS 5 Brings Photo-Realistic Lighting To RTX 50-Series

I had to sit with this. I agree that when looking at lighting, shadows, distant environmental rendering and how it interacts with those aspects we can see a noticeable uplift in perceived fidelity. That said, I find that the "fidelity increases" dull the unique look of the games. They no longer look distinct and aside from big setting differences, castle vs city, if you had to guess which is which with Deep Learning Super Slop on, while focusing on a scenically neutral spot, you'd be hard pressed which is not good. Then there is the glaring "Yassification" of the characters, near ground environment features, and general change in tone of the scenes which is damning. I think Nvidia has shot too close to the sun here.

Disappointed with Oliver's rushed VO work in the video. He tries to cover for the bad Generative AI Character filter. Then Rich claims that the renderer isn't doing anything except changing lighting when we can clearly see Grace has transformed into her most Yassified Girl Boss self. Also the comments about how the environment looks more true to life, I couldn't disagree more. It looks worse than most PS4 baked-raster games. I found that part to be disingenuous and harmful to DF's credibility moving forward. It will take a long time to earn trust back from that.

Of course I look forward to less rushed and more long form thoughts from the team and better justifications for why this looks good.
