I know the Amiga predates John’s time and was far more popular in Europe than in the United States. Still, it marked a huge leap in two-dimensional graphics during the latter half of the 80s and was arguably the ultimate computer gaming machine of its era (Defender of the Crown blew my mind when I saw it first time in 1987, for the graphics and the sound!!).
It would be fantastic to see the hardware in action again and introduce a new generation to what made it so special. As far as I know, Rich was a major Amiga user before switching to PC and its flashy Doom-style pseudo-three-dimensional graphics (I also made the leap to PC in the early 90s). Maybe he can chip in and be part of such a retrospective, if he ever finds time again.
Anyway, the Amiga’s game library is legendary, and it deserves a proper spotlight.
@Brunuu that's fine, in that case they could add the Atari ST as well. Not sure about C64, since it was a generation before and the leap in sound and graphics to the AMIGA was rather huge. As a kid growing up in Germany I used to read the AMIGA Joker magazine. They did genre specials (such as Simulation Special, RPG Special, Adventure Games Special, and so on). In those magazines they always rated the game in a table comparing Amiga, Atari ST, C64 and PC in categories such as graphics, sound, gameplay, long term motivation, etc. I loved those comparisons. I still have some of those magazines.
Man, I would love to see a retrospective of the true European "almost console" wars - the Atari 65XE vs Commodore 64 and later the Atari ST vs Amiga 500. I remember playing demos with songs about how trashy the Atari ST was.
