... Is what a ton of people say online. Specifically a cohort of Fighting game players at tournaments.

I think this is complete bollocks, and what they are actually facing is a badly calibrated setup.

Either the game, the console or the Screen or any combo of the three, doesn't have the 120hz Input delay reduction VRR modes on. (Or in the screens case isn't capable)

Now PS5s do over heat and power off, or in my case melt the Ethernet port, but is their truth in compromised performance before hitting the shut off?

Can DF test this and sacrifice a PS5 using a hairdryer and a Leo Bodner lag tester. For once and for all?

I never even hear my PS5 kick into the higher rpm fan speeds as long as it has enough space to move air and isn’t enclosed in any way.

My guess would be you’re probably right about what they’re actually seeing, but that being said, if a PS5 were actually overheating, would it be all that weird to see some type of thermal throttling?

Well there is the whole thing with the boost clocks and shared power envelope, and of course and overheated machine is liable to weird things.

I just feel its likely that the machine would shut down before anything major happened.

Thermal throttling is usually set at a CPU design level and it's normally around 90°c, so it's very likely the PS5 has thermal throttling and safety shutdown at an architecture level.

I have a friend who dropped it and had to fix it. Another one had melted the Liquid Metal because he left it on 3 weeks and a half straight so, there are outliers, but it is a really reliable machine. Both my launch unit and the pro had 0 trouble. I hope you get your fix soon if possible.
