Report: Sony Removes PSVR2 Headset from PlayStation Direct Store, Stock Ebbing Worldwide 1

We previously reported on Sony's sale of VR patents to competitor Meta, and a month later another death knell has been sounded for the PlayStation VR2 headset.

According to specialist publication Road To VR, Sony removed its flagship VR headset from the PlayStation Direct store in mid-October in both the US and Japan, its two largest markets, though stock remains in other territories such as the UK and France. Simultaneously, PSVR2 headsets and bundles have been steadily going out of stock for increasing chunks of time on third-party marketplaces like Amazon.

Given the tepid follow-up to the promising PSVR2 launch Sony has delivered in the last three years, it's not entirely surprising that the firm is planning to wind up its VR efforts, but it's still a sad story for fans that invested into the platform. While Sony hasn't made any public statements to say that the headset is discontinued and the hardware will keep working, no doubt dwindling supplies will make repairs and replacements increasingly difficult for existing owners.

Sony did invest some time and resources into a proper PC adapter for the system, so the device will live on with a regular diet of new SteamVR titles, but it now looks increasingly likely that there will be no further investment in the platform.

It's a shame, given that the rumoured PS6 handheld could provide an entirely new way to play PSVR titles, while a PS6 home console would likely provide a surfeit of extra image quality and performance, but sometimes this is the way these things go.

Do you think there's anything left to say in the PSVR2 story? Will Sony ever return to the well of VR? Let me know in the comments below.
