Diablo 4 is a fantastic action RPG that I've enjoyed* on desktop and handheld PCs alike, and it looks like I will soon have a new way to enjoy it on the go.
According to (normally reliable) leaker Dealabs, the long-awaited Switch 2 port could be announced at Gamescom from 26th August. If not, then the announcement and pre-order are expected to coincide with Blizzcon, which kicks off on 12th September. The game is set to release just a few days later, on 15th September.
*Two pieces of evidence: I've reviewed one of its expansions and I happen to be wearing a Diablo 4 t-shirt today.
The report cites two independent leaks from Indonesia and Taiwan for the dates, as well as details on the game's cost and contents. In short, the Switch 2 version will include both major expansions as well as the base game for $70 or £63, a pretty good value compared to what you would have paid for the game and its expansions on release.
A physical version of the Diablo 4 Age of Hatred collection will be available in addition to the eShop release, but it will be a code-in-a-box situation rather than a proper cartridge.
We generally praised Diablo 4 upon its release for its visual fidelity, atmosphere and performance, though it played worse-than-expected on low-VRAM graphics cards and was an unstable 30fps experience on last-gen consoles. The last Diablo game to receive a Switch port was Diablo 3 back in 2018, which was handled by Iron Galaxy - and it went extremely well, so hopefully we see a similarly successful result on the new Nintendo handheld.
