It's no secret that Sony's PlayStation VR2 headset hasn't quite seen the support that VR fans might have expected, with relatively few high profile games after the system's initially promising launch back in 2023 - we called it a "state of the art experience" in our review. Now, the company looks like it may be stepping back from VR and related XR/AR development in a big way, as it has sold 43 US patents to rivals Meta.
The news, which was first reported by ZDNet Korea, shows that the sale took place between June and September, with patents ranging from those relating to specific types of XR glasses, head-mounted displays and related software. In total, 419 patents will be transferred from Sony to Meta, with 180 patents in the US and the remainder in Europe, Asia and other regions.
Thus far, we've only seen one flagship release from Sony from the headset - Horizon: Call of the Mountain - and I only really see this game and Gran Turismo 7's VR mode being mentioned online or in conversations with friends. Sony did follow up the PS5 release with a PC adapter that let the headset work with a much wider range of VR titles, but other PS VR2 specific releases have been extremely thin on the ground.
In fact, the "upcoming PS VR2 games" section on the PS Store doesn't include anything on the brink of release. Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is the biggest name but came out in 2025, "Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrock" [sic] is misspelled and also came out in 2025, and Out of Sight VR still lacks a release date despite reportedly coming out by the end of 2026 - its Steam release has been abandoned for 18 months. It's clear that the PS Store page hasn't been updated in at least a year.
