Microsoft's long-leaked Xbox Elite Series 3 controller looks closer to release than ever, as specs and other information relating to the device were found in the company's Design Lab service, which allows for custom gamepads to be ordered.
The controller, which is set to succeed the seven-year-old Xbox Elite Series 2, is reportedly codenamed Edessa and includes a choice of Hall Effect or TMR sticks, according to data found by Redditor /u/esketitethan. Both technologies have become increasingly standard for third-party controllers over the past five years, as they are more resistant to wear than traditional potentiometer-based designs, but they make different trade-offs in terms of stick feel and power use.
Other specs include improved haptics on par with the Sony DualSense, an audio control dial, a choice of d-pads (including stick, cross and faceted), multiple faceplates, additional paddle styles and so on. The focus looks to be on both pre- and post-purchase customisability, with "Elite Complete" and "Elite Base" options that each can be equipped with or without haptics. Previous leaks showed that the controller has a built-in screen at the top.

The backend data sourced by /u/esketitethan is no longer available, so it's impossible to confirm its authenticity, but the controller itself is definitely expected given the quantity and quality of past leaks.
We've recently covered an excellent third-party Xbox/PC controller in the SteelSeries Aeon Pro and Asus ROG Raikiri 2, so it'll be fascinating to see the new premium first-party option compares when it finally arrives. A release in time for the Christmas shopping season (and GTA 6) would probably make sense.
Are you looking forward to a new Elite? Have you tried either of the first two generations released thus far? Let me know in the comments below.
