@MittenFacedLass you're right it would be a shame if discs get deliberately destroyed. But I don't think it'll happen very much, it's logical to keep the physical copies as insurance in case you eventually want to sell them. If you destroy the discs you lose any potential possibility of getting some money back. Rarer discs may also appreciate, so collections will probably hoard discs with the hope of selling them for a significant profit in the future.
I do see this as a bridge to Helix/PC future. I don't expect many new titles will get physical releases past 2028. This effort is simply to migrate everyone to handhelds and Helix/PC as quickly as possible.
