Fair point regarding the incomplete state of software on discs. Playing unpatched games is imperfect but, to me, preferable to having no option to play a game in the future.

I don't think I was clear in my analogy to other physical media. To me at least, the effort it takes to set up a record makes me set aside the time and space to listen carefully. Likewise, I approach a physical game differently than something in a digital list. The friction to start changes my mindset, even if the game is identical. I read a hardback book differently than a Kindle book. They're the same words, but I process the ones on paper with more care.

Not everyone experiences things the same way as I do. Physical media make me slow down and pay attention. I'm sure to some, there isn't a distinction.

One small point: in most cases, it isn't fair to think of recorded music as final or authoritative. A recording is a very different thing than a live performance, which most musicians would consider to be the real work. A recording is an imperfect facsimile taken out of context.

Marketplace pressure. If any company has a closed market with no competition, they're immune to normal price pressures. Even if you buy digital only, the retail market impacts prices.

Also, collecting is a fun hobby for some of us. If it doesn't do anything for you, that's fine. I enjoy a shelf full of games and the intentionality it takes to load one. It's the same reason people still use physical media for music.

If you're looking for practical value, it provides a snapshot of release day code. If you are measuring the effect of patches, you need a baseline.

I'll gladly withhold my business. I own every console they've made, but I can't imagine why I would want a digital only ps6. The ps5 is basically a PC with unified memory, so there's no unique technology. PC has more competition among marketplaces and more options for preservation. Besides, it's not like Sony is cranking out must play exclusives. I love demons souls and Astro bot, but not enough to invest $1000 in their next console.
