I know MS thinks that Xbox is competing with TikTok, but is DF competing with TikTok, or most people who like mid to long form media would not engage with that kind of content?
I can see where Xbox comes from, when I play war zone with friends in between matches they scroll through social media while I do some other stuff like pet my cat or put the dishwasher.
Am I weird or is this the new normal?
I think it could be said DF is competing for people's attention against something like TikTok. However, I think this is more in terms of significantly growing the audience, making videos more accessible/enjoyable for those who are not as interested in the full details of the respective topic. With regards to competing for the attention of their current audience, I believe it would be less so. I imagine a lot of people who follow DF are more interested in longer-form content, diving into the detail in a way that creates some form of a narrative, as opposed to segmented and (relatively) incomplete short-form content.
I don't think the content that makes up DF's identity is well suited to grab attention from people who crave TikTok-style content (or Vines, as I remember them being called at one point). But it's true that everything and anything media under the sun is competing for people's attention at one level or another, so for DF I can only hope that this website, the patreon and their YT channel keeps resonating with a sustainable audience and they can remain afloat for as long as the team is willing.
