I have been struggling with the fact that there was a big patch launch line up but with some big quality issues, and some games still are looking bad like SH2 or SHf. I think things improved a lot with Star Wars patches, with Outlaws and Jedi Stutter Survivor, but Jedi still has a vignette issue in performance mode. And there are some devs who made big improvements like AC shadows. Others did the lazy job of letting VRR run higher or Res bumps with little impact on IQ overall. Thoughts?

I don't know, I'm happy with my Pro, but I've mostly managed to avoid the games that have issues - or gotten to them once they were mostly resolved.

The positive has definitely outweighed the negative for me, but I also get how there being any negative at all could be considered unacceptable.

It’s a great piece of hardware for the price.

It’s unfortunate that some devs have continued to implement PSSR when it’s clearly not the right choice for their game, or they’re just not implementing it correctly. What I don’t get is the Pro has 6+ more teraflops of GPU than the standard PS5, so why not just turn up the resolution and call it a day if PSSR isn’t a clear improvement?

Thankfully most of the games I care about have not had issues, and offer clear improvements over the base PS5.

If the question is do I think the purchase was worth it the answer would be no. The jump we got with the PS4 Pro was more useful and profound.

There are just too many big titles with problems since launch that are flat out being ignored. Outlaws for example is still fundamentally broken on the PS5(to be fair, not just Pro) while the Switch 2 port is receiving near constant patches. Silent Hill 2, Avatar also come to mind. Perhaps the Dec 3rd person patch will fix PSSR?

My hope is that GTA VI was delayed on pressure from Sony to give them time to make a Pro version that actually justifies my 700 bucks.

I find it a bit frustrating to see some studios implementing PSSR without checking if it looks good.
But like @MaulRx said, even in well implemented ways it's doesn't have the same impact as the PS4 PRO had

It is pretty much what I expected, but my expectations were low. The situation with games like Silent Hill f is extremely disappointing. I hesitate to pin that on developers, because surely Sony has a responsibility to support devs who add PS5 Pro enhancements to games, right?

I don't regret my purchase, but I also wouldn't recommend the upgrade to anyone who already has a PS5, especially since you have to buy the disc drive if you want to play anything on disc.

As someone who skipped the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro has exceeded my expectations. There are some strange issues, like SH2, but for most other titles (including VR), the PS5 Pro has introduced great improvements and even without specific improvements it still manages to improve performance overall on most titles I play. For me the standouts thus far have been GT7 (both flat and VR), NMS (VR+PSSR), AC Shadows, Death Stranding 2, Immortals of Aveum and Hitman WoA (VR).

I'm looking forward to seeing the further improvements they plan to introduce to PSSR, as well as seeing more VR games adopt PSSR. I wonder also if they plan to expand the support of their PS4 image enhancement to titles which have PS4 Pro support, as I do think it's made a positive impact to titles like Arkham Knight and TR Definitive Edition.

I kept my base console in case I had to put it out of storage to play some game, but tbh it is sad that some games do not take advantage of its capabilities in the right way. PSSR on AC shadows works great but in silent hill graphics mode can look like ***** during the opening walk so why not res bump? (I played it from disk and it has those benefits).
As for VR support it has been mild, games do look great but games that don't take advantage of it don't really seem like anything better, let alone the fact that Sony left us stranded with first party software
PS4 games that don't have ps4 pro support look great with the upscaled algorithm but there are a few that don't turn out as expected.
Then there is VRR, they fixed VRR for both consoles base and pro but games without proper 30 fps caps at the system level or even silent hill 2 cutscenes at 30 do stutter, so I have to disable optional vrr completely sometimes. It is an improvement but not complete.
All things considered it is good and I am very happy to have it, but is not necessary unless in some third party games at performance mode, which is baffling, some third party implementations are great and other are outlandishly bad

I didn't buy a PS5 Pro mostly because the price was just too high to justify the upgrade. My cap was $600 for it since anything above that just didn't seem worth it based on the fact that its mostly a GPU upgrade. I would have maybe considered the higher price if it also came with a nice CPU upgrade as well to help guarantee 60FPS in all games. Also the fact the PSSR seems to have issues with UE 5 games is not great and also not making me want to upgrade. I think at this point I'll be waiting for the PS6 to upgrade since it should provide the sort of upgrades I'm looking for, for hopefully around the same price point if not slightly lower depending on how aggressive Sony is with the margins.

I'll also say that the expanded storage is very welcome, a hefty upgrade over the launch model (or even the current slim model). I do pair it with an additional 2TB SSD, though, as well as a 4TB USB drive. 1TB extra however doesn't make up for losing the BD drive, but in my case I just planned ahead and bought a new drive on sale months prior to the Pro release, so I did not feel the economic impact as much.

Snorlaxcat

@Hustler_One I bought the bd drive, an I am very happy with how it looks with it, in fact it is an upgrade because my launch model was all digital

Snorlaxcat

Hustler_One

@Snorlaxcat nice, I also prefer how it looks with the drive, it's kinda very slim without it, especially if displayed vertically (I keep mine horizontal, though).

OT, DF also posted their own year one impressions, and I'm sad that John does not have any comments regarding the performance of Lichdom Battlemage on the Pro: https://youtu.be/7MJ6bnJ0WmI?si=Ui8WgoblaDnW50C5

I've been pretty happy with it, recently with Ghost of Yotei and Ninja Gaiden 4, but I do think Konami needs to get their stuff together and figure out what their issues really are.

It does kind of feel like PSSR wasn't ready yet but I do like how it resolves in motion which hey, I am 95% of the time.

It's done its job but FF7 Rebirth really set the bar high and others didn't bother to meet or exceed it.

Honestly, while I've enjoyed Horizon Forbidden West and Death Stranding, it feels like it's largely going to be my GTA VI Console.

I really, really wish the Pro was out when FF7 Rebirth came out because that was rough the the OG PS5. Playing at 30FPS on an OLED was something.

Now that fixes and PSSR toggles got patched into the Ubisoft games, I feel like Konami titles are the only ones where you’re getting a clear downgrade; in almost every other scenario, the Professional either keeps up with or exceeds base console performance. It’s a bit embarrassing that Sony doesn’t approach devs who do a subpar job or at least offers the base version, but all in all the games with good upgrades outnumber the bad ones.

I'm happy with mine specially as it's the 30th anniversary edition. But the upgrade hasn't been as noticeable as the PS4 > PS4 Pro was, imo.

PSSR takes more compute power than what I was expecting it to. Some games running at a lower resolution while using PSSR to scale back up, compared to the base PS5 settings. I was expecting this to be a clean "take a 1440p base PS5" game and magically make it look like 4K while maintaining the same FPS and graphics settings. It's not the case in every game.

Wondering how PSSR 2 will run, and what to expect from the PS6.

I had no real problems so far. Silent Hill was to bad but I am glad to have played DS2 on a pro system. I know its even a longer wait now but I cant imagine running GTA6 on a non pro system. Like with PS4 you will notice the difference more at the end of the systems lifespan.

I didn't bother yet, and it's unusual for me to skip Playstations. I have never really felt the urge. I had a slight pang having to run Creed Shadows at 40fps to get the good lighting, but there hasn't been any use case I've seen that has really sold it to me. By the time GTA 6 comes out maybe we will be too near PS6 to bother.

I'm quite happy with the regular PS5, just like the PS4 Pro I didn't see much value in the Pro, but at the time it made perfect sense, especially for PSVR and 4K TVs. There were things the PS4 Pro could do that the PS4 physically couldn't.

Now, that's not the case, it's just a PS5++.
