This showed up in my feed (thanks Wario64). Controller and steam machine definitely seem interesting for me, hopefully the machine is a big leap in performance compared to the steam deck.

What do you all think?

Looks cute! That controller certainly seems more reasonable than the original Steam controller. I hope the VR controllers still have some type of finger sensing, but the strapless design seems to imply they don't. Curious to learn more!

Jeez, I was just looking at the USB ports in comparison to the overall dimensions and that thing seems pretty freakin tiny!

"The included plug-and-play 6GHz wireless adapter provides a dedicated link for both VR and non-VR streaming. Steam Frame's dual radios make this connection even more stable: One radio is dedicated to streaming the audio and visuals, and the other connects to your Wi-Fi. Two dedicated links, no competition for bandwidth."

"Foveated Streaming is a new feature that optimizes detail where your eyes are looking, and typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. Behind the scenes, we're using low-latency eye tracking data to steer the best quality pixels only to where you're looking. This is all happening without you noticing, and works for your entire Steam library."

I never really liked the valve design, and it doesn't look like that's going to change now.

Very boring, just straight lines and that's it.

insta-proposing this topic for DF weekly lol (I'm sure it will be covered).

I think I'll try to preorder the machine and controller and then decide after. I wonder what pricing will look like, maybe around 499?

Based on the specifications on the website, it seems to have performance similar to the PS5 and Series X? The CPU will certainly be better, but graphically it might not be.

It's definitely worse than the PS5 Pro.

The price will be very important.
If it costs 400 euros, it will be a winner.

The controller and steam machine look really nice, I just bought my quest 3 some prescription lenses so I might skip the frame though. I hope the machine works for streaming be to my quest since i don’t have a windows pc(nor will i get one with this coming out)

The 8gb seems low, but I’m mostly playing non demanding games on my steam deck anyways nowadays and I’m not super interested in newer games outside my switch 2.

the frame does make my expected leap of the deck 2 to arm vs x86 seem more realistic.

I wonder how the next xbox will compete with this outside flopping with copilot built in

I'm very happy for DF, great Video and information on the machine!

Very interested in the Steam Machine. Specs are interesting, but I'm very skeptical of the 8 GB VRAM. According to the DF video, it looks like Valve is insisting that it is enough, but only time will tell. This comes at a perfect time as I'm getting frustrated with Windows and spending increasingly more time on my Steam Deck playing indie games. Eager to see the price and hopefully the delivery rollout is better than the Steam Deck's!

I think one thing that is being slept on is the fact that the Steam Frame is running on an ARM chipset - Snapdragon 8 Gen 3! That is a huge deal and hopefully indicates further attention from Steam to ARM.

After watching the DF video... I'm very skeptical of the 8GB VRAM too. I already have the PS5 pro so I was hoping for something similar or better performance on the steam machine to make it worthwhile, but I guess they are really trying to keep price point low. We'll see.

A bit disappointed by those specs, ngl. Excited for the controller though, hope it's not crazy expensive.

One key feature they mention about the Steam Frame is the ability to play non-VR games. Would that be via a streaming service like Moonlight/Sunshine? I'd never considered you could do that with a VR headset, but it's very compelling to me.

As someone who basically uses a PC exclusively for gaming (I use a Mac for video/photo editing and all the rest), this definitely looks like an appealing product. I'm not sure how much I can trust their claims in terms of performance though.

I guess it all comes down to pricing. If it's a 499€/$ starting price machine, it's gonna be a huge success in my opinion, and something I would definitely buy.

My xbox group are now considering this, but I do worry that the RAM will render it fairly useless for playing the newest games after 3 years...

Going from xbox to Steam as an online gaming group opens up such a huge library of games to play together though.

You'll probably want to wait for alternatives, like the Steam Deck, a bunch of other alternatives from various brands have appeared.

We are about to enter a new era of TV PC.
Lenovo and Asus will likely have their own PC TV.

I can imagine a "ROG Machine" arriving on the market quickly.

Now that I think about it, this seems like terrible news for Microsoft.
If these alternatives from Asus, Lenovo, etc., come to exist, which OS will they use? Windows or SteamOS?

Brunuu

Stan546

@Brunuu Thats a good point, but with a group, there's 6 of us, having bang for buck helps sell the transition and get everyone on board.

Any alternative would be sold at profit, so likely wouldn't come close on price.

Edit: You make a good point on the alternative OS as well, makes no sense using MS OS when Valve has this out in the open.
