It makes no sense. If supply chain costs for RAM and NVMe are practically extortionate, they should just sell a barebone.

They could have even opened barebone pre-orders earlier, because honestly, back in January you could still find NVMe drives at decent prices, at least in Europe.

Furthermore, it makes no sense to sell some of the Steam Machines with only a single RAM stick. I wonder if they will start getting returns because of that, or what percentage of buyers will be affected by it
