I’m making the very first post here! it’s awesome that we finally have a place to talk about games like this!
Lately I’ve been playing Alone in the Dark on PS3 (Yes, it’s 2025 and I still buy and play PS3 games), and it really surprised me.
This game is incredible and way more ambitious than people give it credit for. It’s one of those titles that barely gets talked about anymore, but it truly deserves more attention.
For its time, especially on the PS3, there’s a lot that’s genuinely impressive: the detailed physics system, the way fire spreads, the real-time inventory (opening your jacket to combine items right there!), and the whole ruined New York setting full of tension and atmosphere.
Considering the hardware limitations back then, it’s crazy how much they pulled off technically.
And honestly, the framerate isn’t even that bad. Sure, it dips now and then, but nothing that ruins the experience.
It’s got its flaws, no doubt, but also tons of originality and ideas that were way ahead of their time.
The AI is awful, but that's a good thing because otherwise the game would probably be too difficult due to the controls not being very intuitive haha
Anyone else played it recently for this helloween or remember it from back in the day?
Digital Foundry should make a video about this and compare it to the PS2 port.
I have really fond memories of playing it on PC way back. I especially loved the immersive inventory and the immersive sim elements. I haven't tried it in a long time though, and I worry that I might have a really hard time sticking with it today.
I was trying to get the platinum, but at some point I had a weird progression issue and had to restart it, so I stopped playing it for a while. But it's a pretty good experience, it's a AAA game that tries a lot of different things and it's kind of like Ghostbusters in how it pushes simulated physics to the forefront, plus it's always lovely to hear the late James McCaffrey in a starring role.
I'm thinking of getting the platinum trophy for the game, but the controls are difficult to handle in fast-paced situations.
The game has a very cool mechanic that allows you to skip sections of the game, like a movie, and allows you to go back and forth, which makes it very easy to get trophies.
The only trophies that are locked are the chapter trophies.
@Brunuu yeah, there's at least one trophy which requires playing the game from start to finish without skipping chapters or sequences, and I think that at some point I just lost my progression somehow. But I'll definitely try again, I was enjoying my time with the game!
Oh wow, I had no idea there was a Wii version. I was aware of the PS2 version at least. I also recently found out that Tiësto made track dedicated to the game (?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6y3IpmTbQs
Oh wow, the things I'm learning! Tiësto even made a song for this game!
In the game, this music is cut off, usually, only the first 3 seconds play in the game.
I watched some 240p videos of the Wii port that are over 10 years old, graphically it's much inferior, and I think it ruins some of the atmosphere.
The two classic titles from the PS1 are on PS5 with trophies now. I had The New Nightmare back when it was new on Dreamcast and recall it being pretty decent. No RE2 but still good.
I'm a huge Alone in the Dark fan since the original from 1992, and I bought Alone in the Dark 2008 at launch for the Xbox 360. The disappointment was immense. It had good ideas, but the plot was just stupid and Edward Carnby was written to be an idiot and a bully. More swearwords than normal discussion, eh? Stopped playing after a few hours.
That said, I did finally go back last year after playing the new Alone in the Dark 2024 (why three games with the same name?) which I did like. The new playthrough with 2008 version was OK when I had the right campy tongue-in-cheek attitude with it. I hated the racing sections, but I liked the physics with fire and laughed at the car when it flung high in the air after colliding with the curb. I did eventually get 1000/1000 achievements and now I could shelve it for good. I don't think I'll ever play it again.
Would I recommend it? Yes and no. It's cheap on the 360 and PS3. It's an acquired taste and is a 6/10 at it's best moments. It still is quite unique and worth a playthrough in my opinion.
