Topic: Is PS5 Pro Year One what you expected?

In my eyes, my PS5 pro has been a great experience and exactly what to expect. I mostly play first party games where new technique implementation tends to be top of the line. As a result, this generally translates to the vast majority of my Pro experiences being that games have a straight positive bump with higher resolutions, better performance, and varying levels of ray tracing techniques applied where there previously were none (and sometimes even a combination of these 3 benefits together).

In games where there is no patch, games are simply running better if they were underperforming their frame rate targets or resolutions are increased for games with DRS solutions.

It just so happens that many of the games that have poor implementations are generally games I don't play in the first place. Maybe I just got lucky with that.

All in all, since the launch of the PS4, I don't really expect prices to drop like they used to and I also assume that console generations will last 2-3 years longer as it takes significantly more powerful and expensive hardware to have the same level of improvements that we used to. If those trends continue, early adoption on mid-gen updates means I'm able to get consistently better experiences every 3 - 4 years without much drawback. Also considering how long people hold onto old consoles nowadays as there main gaming devices, that's also meant that selling my old consoles right at the launch of a new one that helps me subsidize my new purchases with 60% - 80% of my old console's original price. So in terms of expenses, the upgrade process becomes a lot more affordable. Not to mention that with the change to more modern architecture vs old gens (PS1 -> PS2 ->PS3) where each generation was using unique architecture, there is no real drawback to playing old games on the newest hardware across the PS4 and PS5 generation. The PS5 is more or less just a super PS4 upgraded 3 times haha.

Also let's not forget PSSR is a first generation technique. I never expected it to be perfect and I would fully expect PSSR 2 to be a significant update.

for what it is worth pssr was quite good for starters it was Sony going into AI for the first time ever, they never attempted anything like this and I would never undermine the effort of mark cerny to fix a problem when AMD was doing fsr1 yet. In fact amethyst clearly shows us that Sony fixed the motion issues in upscaling and AMD fixed the final image issues, if you combine pssr 1.4 or whatever and fsr 3.2, you clearly get what is fsr 4 they clearly integrated both approaches and got the killer cnn model. As for a transformer model I don't expect to get any of that next gen, I expect transformer to get to consoles during ps7 or ps6 pro, but the case for ps6 pro is another maybe, I think ps5 pro prove it's worth as niche console for non pc gamers like me. Maybe that is just the case, maybe it is just an upgrade for non pc users. Maybe ps7 will be modular and will be upgradable without some sort of modular eGPU and you will not have to do a ps7 pro or you can build your bundle with disc drive and pro gpu or not.

It's been better than I expected when I bought it back in July, simply because I don't share a lot of the complaints people have with some of the upgrades (or, tbf, they've been improved since launch and I missed the worst of them).

So games like Jedi Survivor, SW Outlaws, and Avatar all look fantastic to me with PSSR, and huge improvements over the base versions. I wasn't expecting that at all. The first party Sony game also look great but are more in line with what I expected.

Overall I've found it to be a similar upgrade to the PS4 Pro (at least if you always play performance modes, as I do). They both take games from looking fairly questionable on a 4k screen to looking pretty great, if imperfect. That's more than worth it to me.

I'm really happy with my PS5 Pro.
It does what I expected it to do, except for some developers' decisions (looking at you Konami).

I'm looking forward to upgrades to PSSR and how that will be implemented.

I am really expecting to see what tom's take is on SH2 on xbox series x, it would be a bit of a bummer if they ported it and don't patch a fix to the ps5 pro version.

I think the upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro has been disappointing personally compared with the upgrade from PS4 to PS4 Pro. It's not that the console is bad, it is just that the enhancements over the base system do not really justify paying nearly double the price in retrospect.

For starters, the PS4 Pro was not only an upgrade in terms of offering 4K support (even if most games were 1440p at most) but it didn't cost much more than the base system was at launch. It was a great value upgrade with the only disappointment being the lack of support for 4K movie discs like the Xbox One X.

The PS5 Pro in comparison was much more expensive so the upgrades in visuals and performance needed to justify that extra cost. Having to buy the disc drive attachment as an optional extra at £100 was not a great start and over time I've become a bit of a hater of PSSR. PSSR is clearly nowhere near as good as DLSS, although it initially seemed quite promising, and seems to have far too many visible artefacts to the extent that it feels like it is a beta test run for the something better (FSR4 on PS6?).

What is worse is that there are games that arguably have inferior image quality and/or performance to the base system which absolutely should never be happening on an expensive premium Pro console and they is no way to fallback to the PS5 modes.

It doesn't help that there are certain publishers out there who strip the multiple modes of the base system for a single one on Pro with PSSR. Ubisoft did this initially but seem to have toned down a bit now but Konami seem to be the worst offenders with great games like Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta and Silent Hill f all shipping with issues that have never been fully fixed.

What I want to see going forward is Sony being more pro-active over PS5 Pro enhancements, ensuring that the games ship with at least the same modes and options as the base system but, if required, with additional modes and options to support the high-spec console. PSSR should always have an on/off toggle and performance should be as good if not better than the base system. There should never ever be a game release which has inferior image quality and/or worse performance than the base system.

I just started Lost Soul Aside, and that game is quite the looker on Pro, even when favoring performance. May not have all the bells and whistles (some surfaces clearly use SSR), but the base resolution and the upscaling under use result in great IQ for me, and looks greatly improved over the amateur.

Not that I'm defending the publishers, but in fairness, this seemed like Cerny's vision. He said in the technical presentation stream that Pro should offer the image quality of quality/fidelity modes with the frame rate of performance modes. I don't think he came out and said one mode should be the goal, but he definitely emphasized that choosing a mode can be difficult and comes with trade-offs on the base console that the Pro seeks to eliminate.

It is terrible that there's no option to disable Pro enhancements. I'd love to play Silent Hill f, but I can't stand the shimmering on Pro and don't have a base PS5 anymore.

Couldn't agree more.

Surely the owners of a Professional are more likely to understand and play with multiple modes than owners of a regular PS5? 🤷‍♂️

The updated PSSR can't come soon enough, I'm hoping it's easy to back port to existing titles to fix some of these issues.

Avatar, a game with known PSSR issues, was updated today. Two guess if they fixed said issues...

And if MLiD is to be believed, the upcoming Multi-Frame Super Resolution 2 (aka, PSSR 2) is a very significant upgrade over the first version, apparently comparable to the upgrade from FSR 3 to 4. If this is adopted by most titles, then year 2 impressions should be even better.

For me going from PS4 to PS4 Pro was a nobrainer. I had a 4K TV and I was in love with PSVR. Plus the checkerboarding was (and still is) really impressive.

However, the PS5 Pro is a hard sell for me. I almost bought it during Black Friday, but I would've needed to buy a drive since most of my games are on disk, which kind of ruined it for me. Also, like Renki, I have a powerful PC, and I can play most games on it, including PSVR2.

it is not straightforward for sure, but tbh I have my 65 inch tv next to my feet on my sofa bed so I sit close enough to notice, also 60fps with better iq is better for my psyche, I get anxious about 30 when I am stressed out about work, and turning to 60 to get ps360 iq is a mess. But I look forward to support post ps6, that would be interesting to see if it really paid off for those who can't or won't upgrade straightaway.

I am kind of expecting the PS5 Pro to tide me over until PS6 Pro comes around, I don't think there's any game or feature that would push me to drop the PS5 Pro in favor of the PS6 knowing they'll just make a Pro version down the line.

I'm not sure if the PS5 Pro has been a disappointment to me or I've just been spoilt by my PC. I had an original PS5 which I sold before the Pro came out and then I purchased a Pro day 1 but sold it last month.
I found the cross platform games (Star Wars Outlaws, Silent Hill 2 Remake, etc) just had too many graphical issues compared to PC, so I preferred to play there. I'm a big fan of Sonys strategy to get more games elsewhere, but this admittedly ment the bulk of the Sony games I love (Uncharted, Spiderman, etc) I could now play on PC.
The only games that made me hesitate a bit on selling was the exclusives I enjoyed still left on the platform, GT7 and Demons Souls but 2 games was not enough for me.
While I like the Xbox and Sony policy of getting all/more of their games everywhere, I'm beginning to think this might be the start of the end of consoles (except Nintendo anyway!!!)

It's a lovely well well made system, but as an upgrade its a letdown and not a patch on the PS4 Pro or more so the One X upgrade
