Topic: So about the PSSR toggle...

Maybe I misunderstood how the latest video explained it but from reading the PlayStation Blog it doesn't seem to be a toggle in the true sense of the word.

It seems to me that games still need to be updated to take advantage of PSSR #2. The button they are adding seems to just be a way for un-updated games to use it. A lot of stuff on the Internet is strongly implying that the switch gives PSSR2 capabilities to all games which is clearly not the case.

I mean, on the surface why would the toggle even need to be there? Who would choose to turn off the main selling point of the Pro?

It's a toggle. It's already been announced on the PlayStation official blog.

Why a toggle?? Because maybe there are some cases where PSSR1 or the default upscaler is better. Like what happened with PSSR1. RE9 isn't a game with alot foliage, so we don't know how well it'll do when it has to handle open world games. Also it seems like UE5 games did the worse with PSSR1 and should just use TSR, Unreal's default scaler. There may also be more of a performance impact using PSSR2, remember AI is RAM heavy.

Maybe I'm not being clear. It seems Sony is saying that this will allow PSSR1 games, that are not updated with a patch for 2, to use 2 in some capacity. It's not just "Hey PSSR 2 is here system wide and you can turn it on and off at will"

I mean RE9 is out using it as the DF video says and the toggle isn't, right?

The internet is basically sayingthinking it's a system wide toggle for the feature proper and that was what I understood being said in the DF video on first watch.

So the order would be PSSR2 Native games → PSSR 2 forced → PSSR1 in essence.

Yes, basically the toggle will allow PSSR1 to be over-ridden by PSSR2. If a game supports PSSR1, you can turn on the toggle so it uses PSSR2 instead. If a game does not have PSSR support it will not work. On the website it shows the actual toggle. Too bad DF doesn't allow upload of images. Here's the actual quote: "There will also be a system software update at that time; selecting “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in Settings on PS5 Pro will allow you to experience the new PSSR with ANY PS5 Pro games that currently support PSSR!"
I'm trying to emphasize the word ANY.

Hopefully Sony will implement a patch where all Pro games can use PSSR2 with the toggle but as of right now it's only games that use PSSR1.

As for RE9, it seems future games should use PSSR2 as the default upscaler and there isn't a way too turn it off unless it something like RE9's 120hz mode. I'm guessing PSSR2 is heavier than FSR1 and Capcom had to resort to FSR1 to keep the fps above 90.

It still seems developers will have the freedom to use PS5 Pro's enhancements as they want. Like how Decima games on PS5Pro uses Pico (Progressive Image Compositor) Guerilla's upscaler.

Gotcha, yea that makes sense. More than few big internet outlets are emphasizing a different narrative here. Basically a global PSSR2 is here. Wishful thinking maybe, I don't know.

I'm hoping Sony really leans on the studios to update previous PSSR games. It's the least they can do. Avatar for example to this day still looks horrible; even after the paid DLC that supposedly updated PSSR. Silent Hill 2 etc etc.
