Got a Steam Controller? Got a metallic watch strap? You might want to be careful when it comes to handling the charging Puck, as its exposed contacts are always live and could give you a shock if they touch your watch strap.
That's exactly what happened to /u/Toikka, who posted the grisly aftermath to the /r/SteamController subreddit. They were charging their Pixel Watch 4, equipped with a popular third-party wrist strap, right next to where they were also charging their Steam Controller. The watch strap and Puck made contact accidentally, and both became visibly scorched as a result.
Thankfully, the Steam Hardware team has already been in touch with Toikka to offer a replacement Puck, and get the watch charger and Puck in so they can investigate the issue. Neither the Puck nor the smartwatch were rendered inoperable by the incident, and most importantly no one was hurt.
It seems unlikely that the Puck would be able to be operate any differently and still charge in the same way, but perhaps there are mitigations that could be put in place to ensure that the Puck is latched onto an actual Steam Controller before it dispenses current.
In the meantime, maybe consider separating your Puck and any other nearby chargers, and be careful while handling the Puck while it's plugged in and you have anything conductive nearby. I have exactly the same wrist strap for my Apple Watch, so I'm going to be extra-careful just in case.
Is this something that ought to have been caught before launch? Or just one of those freak occurrences? Let us know in the comments below.
