Re: "PS5 Will Be My Last Console": After 45K Votes, 86% of DF Viewers Say Sony Should Reconsider Killing Physical Games

@themightyant most likely 50:50 or near enough.

Yes, many won't care, there will also be many who favour the change for environmental purposes or convenience. Some may not care if a 15 year old game is no longer accessible. Still, I'd wager that if you were to look at engagement for tentpole franchises, that small little bubble (I think there are also people who sit outside of the bubble who can appreciate what the bubble is saying) of people are important. I'd wager we make up a sizeable portion of day one sales.

I do understand what you are saying though and think it is a valid point.

@themightyant of course. But it is the avid gamer and loyal fanbase who play an important role in driving platform popularity, establishing it as the casual platform, and are likely easy to win early buyers.

Similar to this observation. I believe the circa 15% figure provided by PS is a massive underrepresentation of the true split which is somewhere inbetween the 15% and 86% here.

Re: "Don't Kill the Disc": Petition Against Sony PS5 and PS6 Digital Media Plans Reaches 150,000 Signatures

@Superrob I understand where you are coming from. However, the digital proposition driven by Sony is far more restricted as compared to the fairly relaxed and completely chilled offering of Steam and GOG, respectively. The issue is that at no point in time do you actually own the game. Should a licencing issue (or other issue leading to the revoking of a digital licence) come through they have direct authority to remove the game from your library. This means you cannot play it until Sony say so.

I understand that discs are sparsely complete to play, and rarer so a polished version. However, they key point is that some discs still represent a polished and complete (at the time of launch) package.

I'm not against digital media, as there are clearly benefits. Swapping discs can be a hassle. I for one struggle for space and need to consider impact of growing collections on depleting free storage space. However, the negatives of digital media, for me, and clearly for many avid gamers out there, far outweigh the positives. Despite this, the choice has remained. This is all set to change. That is the key issue here.

@Godzookie True. I would be right behind you there. However, investment is probably going onto data centres or supporting AI which are absolutely horrendous for the local and wider environments (noise, light, emission, and non-emissions pollution). Additionally, there be a concession which completely removes fears of digital ownership. The latter would never be a possibility with how greedy PS has become. The former is a likely scenario, seeing as there have been reports that disc manufacturing sites have been repurposed for other optics in demand for AI.

The level of corporate greed is just horrendous. I feel like the video gaming industry has just lost its identity. This has been driven by chasing ever wider profit margins at the expense of the gaming community and industry.

I don't think any adult was so ignorant to believe that corporations truly cared about the gamer more than money. However, the way they won over your money was through goodwill and having an identity. This is just absolutely nowhere to be seen, heard or felt anymore through major platform holders and publishers.
