The Steam Controller launched this week, but if you tried to buy any more than an hour or so after launch, you were likely to be disappointed by an "out of stock" message. Now, Valve has detailed exactly when Steam Controllers will be able to order once again, and how they're preventing Steam Controllers from being purchased en masse for resale.
In short, Valve is going back to the tried and tested reservation queue. If you bought a Steam Deck direct from Valve, then you'll likely be familiar with this: you register your interest, get an email when your spot in the queue comes up, and then you have 72 hours to either place an order or relinquish your place.
The anti-scalping provisions feel fair too, with one Steam Controller purchase allowed per customer - so those that have already ordered one can't order a second just yet. Additionally, to place an order you need a Steam account in good standing (ie no VAC bans) that made a purchase before April 27th this year, around a week before the Steam Controller first went live.
Did you pre-order Valve's Steam Controller? (362 votes)

- No, but I tried to
- No, I'm waiting
The Steam Controller reservation system will start on May 8th at 10AM PDT, which works out to 6PM UK time. Ladies and gentlemen, start your watches.
In the meantime, you can have a play with the CAD files Valve released for the Steam Controller and its puck to support community accessory creation - or read our full Steam Controller review.

Surprised they didn't do this in the first place. Maybe they didn't think they'd be a hit?
Come on, come on, move to Picked up by carrier.
@Granadico I agree, it seems really odd, especially as they already said that they will do it for the Machine and Frame.
@StooMonster Me too. Frustrating as it said on ordering 3-5 days...lol.
@Vyns @Granadico It's not unreasonable for players to want more than one controller. How many PS5 or XSX pads do most people have? Whereas one Steam Machine / Frame per customer seems more reasonable.
I read a lot about the price of the controller been high, and maybe it is, but I only paid £85 and that included Postage and packing. So really I only paid around £75 for the controller.
Yes an Xbox controller can cost around £60, but it doesn't have touch, gyro or back buttons.
It was a really smooth order for me this time I was on there at 17:58 and it opened early, I was checked out via paypal, paid and had my email confirmation by 18:00, looks like it has just shipped today too
@StooMonster Has yours changed yet, mine is still 'Packaged Item'.
I wonder if they oversold and are waiting on new stock to ship out.
@Vyns It shipped yesterday and the tracking number tells me that it's still with the courier (GLS) in the Netherlands — I guess because it's the weekend.
So I'm expecting it early next week.
@Granadico If you want to be cynical you could argue that by not implementing the anti scalper measures for the release, Valve made sure to minimise its own financial risk. Selling as many contollers as possible from the first batch is a way to make sure you recoup as much of the development cost as possible even if the product is a bomb.
Now that they have a better grasp of consumer demand, they can swoop in with the "scalper protection".
@Vyns Huzzah, it just arrived. I still prefer coloured XYAB buttons, but this is a very nice controller indeed.
Just had a message today (12th) that they are shipping mine.
